Writer’s Groups

Does anyone out there belong to a writer’s group?  I’m thinking of joining my local writer’s group, but it costs $40/yr to become a member.  I’ve read so many mixed things about them – mostly negative although I imagine a lot depends on the members.  I just thought it might be a good way to meet other writers in the area and maybe learn something new.

So, if anyone has had experience with a writer’s/critique group, I was wondering what your thoughts were.  Were they helpful or just a waste of time?

About T. R. Kolbe

I have been writing since July 2010. I wrote one novel although I haven't finished editing it and I don't know that I will. I have also completed 3 short stories and have 3 more that I am working on.

  1. I’m not crazy about writers groups, especially if you have to pay for it. As artists, we should want to help each other out because we want to see each other succeed. Obviously, we cannot just sit around, reading other’s works non stop, but a book or short story or collection of poems every now and then never hurt. I’ve discovered a few people who love to read over work at my local community college. They work in the writing center so this is nothing new to them. They grow tired of reading college papers so a novel to them is like a vacation. They still give constructive feedback though. Since I am a student there, I get unlimited access to them. Not sure if you have a resource like that as your disposal, but it might be worth looking into to at least make a few connections.

Thank you for the suggestion. I thought it was a little odd to have to pay to be in the group, especially when the meetings are held at a coffeehouse.

I belong to our local writer’s group, The Hampton Roads Writers. They ask for a $35 or more donation to help cover the costs of an annual writer’s conference along with outreach programs for kids. Check out http://www.hamptonroadswriters.org to see how it is organized.

Thanks for the link. I like how they tell you how the money is used on that website. The one I’m looking at doesn’t tell you what the money is for but I did see that they sponsor a writer’s conference every year and have guest speakers at the meetings so it probably goes towards that.

There’s a meeting on the the 20th that I’ve decided to go check out — I think I can go to the first meeting for free so I’ve got nothing to lose..

We invite every writer, member or not. If they insist you pay up – start your own writer’s group!
